Text Box: MUSIC AND
THE DEAF

Text Box: It has been an exciting time for workshops since the last newsletter and we are receiving more and more requests for us to visit schools and other groups to provide workshops with deaf people of all ages:

Sunnyside Primary School, Middlesbrough.

Danny led a morning workshop at Sunnyside Primary School in Middlesbrough. The school already provides music lessons for deaf young people and currently uses our Keys to Music guide. Danny was delighted to see how well the guide was used in the school. The young people used ideas from the guide to create their own compositions and teachers commented that they had benefited from watching Danny leading the workshop and asked for him to come back again.

Croydon Deaf Children’s Society

Danny and Steven led a full day workshop in Croydon in November. It was an extremely busy day with a large group of young people from the ages of 3 to 14! Danny and Steven were delighted to meet up again with some young people they had worked with earlier this year. All the young people created music compositions while their parents were attending the AGM. There was a lot of noise but it was well worth it in the end when they performed in front of the directors, families and friends. Lots of fun was had by all!

Training Opportunities

We’re getting more and more requests from Music Services and from Education Services to provide training for their staff. Danny has been working with all the Music services in West Yorkshire through the 1-to-1 instrumental tuition scheme and the deaf orchestra and has also recently led a training day for North Yorkshire County Council. NYCC have already asked for further help, which will take place in the Spring of 2007.

Paul has led a similar session for Gloucestershire Music Service, which has led to interest from neighbouring services in Worcestershire and Somerset. These are regions where we’ve not had a lot of previous contact so are delighted with this development. Perhaps we shall be seeing more of the M5 in the near future….!
